Politics Cannot Produce Change

The word politics sums up our current problem. The Ultraist movement uses the word in it truest sense, winning and holding control over governments. Those who gain and maintain control dictate policy. Those who dictate policy have the power to enrich themselves.

Human rights may be addressed by politicians, but politics has nothing to do with human rights. Our generation’s most divisive issues are frequently discussed in the political arena with little agreement and even less effective action. When viewed beyond the political landscape, these issues take on a new dimension and their true nature becomes clear. Illegal immigration, slavery, and oppression represent only a small portion of the human rights spectrum.

It is outrageous that American businesses are taking advantage of illegal aliens. Underpaid and over worked, these people are happy to get the little that we give them. They earn more in a few hours in the U.S. than they could in a week at home. Unfortunately, their living conditions are often substandard as is there opportunity for education and advancement.

Human rights issues are even more appalling in their home country. Poor sanitation, lack of necessities, and little or no opportunity for education and advancement are often the least of their problems.

We must recognize that many people are patiently waiting in line for an opportunity to come to America believing that it is the land of opportunity. Should we grant illegal immigrants amnesty and the right to stay here before those who have behaved according to the law?

Illegal immigration, when viewed as a human rights issue becomes no less complex. However, such a view allows us to see the true illegal activity. Who truly gains from the current scenario? Isn’t it the greedy businesses that are ignoring the law and paying substandard wages with no healthcare? Punish the business people who are creating the situation. The human rights issues will begin to repair themselves.
